Awareness is Empowerment

1 in every 28 women in India, according to WHO 2012 report, stands a chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. This figure is expected to rise to 1 in 8 women by 2020. Thousands of women are detected with breast cancer every year. The brighter part is that breast cancer has the highest survival rate among all other types of cancers. The sad part is a high number of patients can be eliminated if only practices of early detection through regular health check ups, self-examination and healthy lifestyle are religiously followed. Sanjeevani…Life Beyond Cancer believes that by being aware of the vulnerability of the current scenario, many of us will step up and take a stand. Hence, in an effort to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education on symptoms and treatment, Sanjeevani…Life Beyond Cancer collaborates with Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, formal and informal groups of people and undertake awareness camps and workshops, with a hope that greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rate, and that the money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable, permanent cure.

Patient-Support Program

When one is detected with cancer, it could take a while to come to terms with reality. Most people follow the cycle of acceptance – starting from Shock, to denial, to anger, to depression, to finally bargaining with reality to accept it and followed by devising solution to combat and conquer the situation. Sanjeevani…Life Beyond Cancer has established itself as a cancer support group, working across the following hospitals
  • Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research & Education in Cancer, Tata Memorial Centre,Mumbai.
  • Rashtrasant Tukdoji Regional Cancer Hospital & Research Centre,Nagpur.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital & Research Centre,Bhopal.

The aim of support group is to:
  • Help reduce negative feelings of resistance, anxiety, stress, guilt, embarrassment, depression, fear, and reinforce the positive feelings of faith, awareness and understanding of cancer, openly talking about one’s condition, acceptance and belief, across stages of acceptance to radiation and even post treatment
  • Help bridge the gap, if any, to reinforce importance of regularity in seeking treatment and taking medication.
  • Facilitate counseling, when required, to patients and/or their family members on specific concerns.
  • Facilitate a platform for patients to connect with survivors or co-patients and/or medical staff for heart-to-heart conversations.
  • Bringing festivals, special occasions right at the doorstep of patients, through social programs by school/college children.
  • Social, Emotional, financial, spiritual and psychological support to patients and relatives to bounce back at life with positivity and zest after treatment.

Donate-a-Wig

Studies indicate that psychological trauma directly impacts the survival rate of Cancer patients.

Hair loss during therapy is responsible for causing depression.

This leads to many female patients refusing treatment.

Donate-a-wig is a program by Sanjeevani for female cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy leading to complete loss of hair.

Sanjeevani provides wigs to cancer patients at ACTREC, Navi Mumbai; RST Nagpur and Jawaharlal Nehru Regional Cancer Centre, Bhopal

Fun events for Cancer Patients

We organize events for Cancer Patients on Festive occasions to make them feel good and fill their immediate atmosphere with vibrancy and joy.

In 2012-13, we conducted two such events at ACTREC, Mumbai

- Diwali Mela – in association with Global Academy, Panvel

- New Year Celebration – presented by Sanjeevani Mumbai Angels

Both these events included Cancer Patients taking the stage to showcase their talent.

Such events provide them with a platform to vent out their emotions and start afresh with a positive attitude.

Walk-a-thons

CANcer. Sanjeevani walkathon is an event to celebrate the positive spirit, the never-say-die attitude, or the hurray-moment (as the founding trustee Ruby Ahluwalia likes to say). It brings people from all walks of life, age and genders – students, teachers, professionals, doctors, patients and survivors, come together and celebrate survivorship, honor those who have lost their battle, and most importantly, raise funds and awareness for the fight against this life threatening disease. Join the fight.

Sanjeevani…Life Beyond Cancer has conducted two walk-a-thons to raise awareness for the fact that if detected early, CANCER IS CURABLE and to personify the I CAN spirit of cancer patients. These walk-a-thons conducted by Sanjeevani are aptly termed as “Can-a-thons”.
